How to Fit an Aircraft Hangar Inside a Science Library
Created a full-scale VR museum in a few square meters, attracting a new generation to local history.

Canvas Idea
The Novosibirsk Science Library had an ambitious goal: to create a flagship museum dedicated to the famous air marshal Alexander Pokryshkin, with his legendary P-39 Airacobra fighter as the centerpiece.
Canvas Challenge
The epic vision of a full-scale aircraft hangar and exhibition had to be reconciled with the physical limitations of a small library space. The challenge was to execute this grand idea within just a few square meters without losing its scale and impact.
Stroke Solution
The key decision—the "one precise stroke"—was to evolve from a simple tech demo ("a plane in an empty room") into a complete virtual museum. Instead of just one exhibit, we built an entire world around it using the library's existing assets. Archival photos were turned into a virtual hangar photo exhibition, and documentary films were screened on a large virtual display. This transformed the VR experience from merely viewing a 3D model into a rich, multi-layered narrative.
Value Metrics
- A New Form of Education: The project became the library's first successful VR integration, proving that modern technology can be a powerful tool for historical and regional studies.
- Attraction for a Younger Audience: The VR museum became a magnet for the younger generation, offering an engaging, interactive format that served as a direct motivation for them to learn more.
- Regional-Level Recognition: The project received high praise from the Ministry of Culture, confirming its significance as a promising direction for cultural and educational activities.
Tech Stack
- 3D Engine: Unity 2021.x with C# scripting
- Graphics Pipeline: High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) for realistic visuals
- VR SDK: SteamVR Plugin for Unity for integration with HTC Vive Cosmos
- Hardware: PC VR setup with HTC Vive Cosmos
- 3D Modeling: Blender / Autodesk 3ds Max for creating the detailed aircraft model
“This high-tech project allows people to learn the biography of a legendary historical figure in a new, modern format. I am convinced that the partnership between state cultural institutions and digital companies opens up great prospects.”— Evgeny Sazonov, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region
