Red Squad VR: How to "Bring to Life" a Museum Exhibit and Increase Visitor Count by 30%

Increased museum visitor count by 30% by "bringing an exhibit to life" with VR

Canvas Idea

The "Sozvezdie" Youth Center Museum possessed unique exhibits—an authentic M-72 military motorcycle and a DP-27 machine gun. Their goal was not simply restoration, but a true "reincarnation"—to create a unique, immersive VR experience that would allow a visitor not just to look at the motorcycle, but to feel what it was like to be one of those military motorcyclists.

Canvas Challenge

How to tell the story of these objects in a way that would captivate a modern generation accustomed to digital entertainment, truly "bringing history to life" and attracting a new, younger audience to the museum.

Stroke Solution

A directorial decision in two parts. First, we abandoned the standard game menu, creating an interactive "virtual lobby" where the player chooses their role by physically approaching the characters. Second, we built the scenario on a sharp emotional contrast: from a calm ride to a sudden breakthrough to the front lines. This created the ultimate "wow effect," proven by players instinctively ducking in their chairs while driving under a virtual tank barrel.

Value Metrics

  • Attracting a New Audience: Museum attendance increased by 30% in the first three months, with 60% of new visitors being young people under 25.
  • Increasing the Value of Exhibits: The average time visitors spent with the real exhibits increased by 50% after the VR experience.
  • Status as a Technological Leader: Named the "most innovative museum exhibit" in the region, leading to free media features and strengthening the museum's reputation.

Tech Stack

  • 3D Engine: Unity 2018.x with C# scripting for gameplay and AI logic
  • VR SDK: SteamVR Plugin for Unity for integration with HTC Vive
  • Hardware: PC VR setup with HTC Vive headset and base stations
  • 3D Modeling & Animation: Blender / Autodesk Maya for character and environment creation
  • Audio: FMOD / Wwise for immersive spatial audio design
Our goal was to 'bring history to life,' but we never dreamed it would be so literal. When you see a visitor, after taking off the VR headset, approach our old motorcycle not as an 'exhibit' but as an old combat companion, you understand that this is more than a game. We didn't give people information; we gave them a memory.Testimonial from a "Sozvezdie" Museum Representative
