The Engineering X-Ray: How AR Turns Complex Equipment into a Desktop Model
Developed an AR "Engineering X-Ray" that cut the B2B sales cycle by answering 90% of technical questions in a single meeting.
Canvas Idea
To create an interactive AR tool for the "Kaskad" construction company, allowing their clients—engineers and industrial managers—to explore the design, features, and benefits of complex equipment like cooling towers.
Canvas Challenge
The primary problem was the "Curse of Scale and Complexity." Kaskad's equipment is massive and technically dense. You can't bring a cooling tower to a meeting, and blueprints fail to convey the real scale and engineering solutions. The challenge was to break this physical barrier, letting clients examine a multi-ton structure as if it were a desktop model.
Stroke Solution
The key decision—the "one precise stroke"—was to develop an "Engineering X-Ray" in Augmented Reality. The app transformed a complex industrial object into an interactive model that could be explored in layers right on the client's desk. It included an AR model for assessing scale and layout, and interactive "X-ray" layers to reveal internal components, animate processes, and display technical data.
Value Metrics
- Shorter Decision-Making Cycle: The AR tool answered 90% of technical questions in a single meeting, a process that previously took weeks of correspondence.
- Convincing Demonstration of Advantages: Complex internal engineering solutions became visible, allowing Kaskad to visually demonstrate its competitive advantages.
- Wow-Effect and Competitive Edge: Using AR in meetings positioned Kaskad as a technology leader, creating a strong impression and setting them apart from competitors.
Tech Stack
- 3D Engine: Unity 2019.x with C# scripting
- AR Framework: AR Foundation for cross-platform AR (ARKit/ARCore)
- 3D Modeling: Optimization of industrial CAD models using Blender / 3ds Max
- UI/UX: Custom UI and interaction logic for layer toggling and animations within Unity
- Platform: Standalone mobile application for iOS & Android smartphones and tablets
“Previously, approving a project like this meant weeks of studying blueprints and tons of emails. With your AR app, I saw all the key components on my own desk in 10 minutes and answered 90% of my team's questions. This isn't just a pretty picture; it's a tool for making fast, informed engineering decisions.”— Sergey Grachev, Chief Engineer of an industrial holding
